HOW WE SELECT THE WINE OF THE YEAR

METRO’s wine experts search annually for a partner with whom they can make the WINE OF THE YEAR. After determining which geographical region is the best to examine for the year, METRO experts look for a wine producer that exudes excellence, and taste hundreds of wines before making their selection. Once METRO has chosen its partner, they create a unique blend for the WINE OF THE YEAR.

Watch out for our seal that emphasizes METRO’s expertise, highlighting that the wine is available exclusively at METRO and that it’s the winning wine of this year.

Tuscany a wine region

The region of Tuscany where our wine is grown is called the ‘gold mine of wines’. Rich soil, perfect climate conditions and excellent grape varieties are perfect conditions for outstanding creations. The Castellani family strives to get the most out of their vines, grapes and truly unique soil, which is full of prehistoric fossils. That’s why the name Castellani stands for the production of wines which are the expression of one of the richest oenological regions in the world.

BORGOBRUNO - RED

In the glass the wine appears with intense ruby red colour and a tendency to garnet reflexes; an excellent wine, with aromas of cherry and dark fruits and light flavours of vanilla. A well - balanced, unique Tuscan blend brings soft and silky tannins, followed by a lengthy and smooth finish that begs for food. Overall, a beautiful and harmonious wine.

The Castellani tradition
Castellani logo

For five generations the Castellani family has been dedicated to producing great wines in Tuscany. The family has over one hundred years of experience in wine production and has always followed the same philosophy: ‘The quality of the wine begins in the vineyard’. In the case of the Castellani family, this is a special soil full of ancient fossils. The Castellani family can use their expertise to create great wines thanks to their own outstanding vineyards and their long and loyal partnership with local winegrowers. As a result, the WINE OF THE YEAR offers a unique blend of everything Tuscany has to offer.

BORGOBRUNO - ROSÉ

Light pink colour; on the nose it’s very fresh, intense with a bouquet of peach and white flowers. On the palate the wine is fresh and shows light berry notes. The finish is clean and balanced. An elegant and fresh Tuscan rosé.

interview how to find a special wine

Bernard, please introduce yourself and  what you are doing.

My name is Bernard Filiol de Raimond and I’m the director of global wine management. My help is to define and implement the most sustainable strategy to meet our professional customers’ needs in the best possible way. My team and I helping each and every MCC country to find the best price/quality wines regardless of their origin. We are currently managing more than 120 international common sourced wine projects including the “Wine of the Year” in 22 MCC countries.

For how long have you been doing this job?

If you consider the wine only, more than 12 years.  Regarding management, procurement and category management in Metro: 21 years.

How did you get involved in the wine business?

Progressively, when I was in Metro France, I got the chance to be category manager in spirits, then spirits and sparkling wines, followed by wines and sparkling. Once you touch it, you can’t leave it.

When was the first WOTY selected?

It was in 2008 and it had been sourced in Argentina with exclusively Malbec grapes. At this time we did 20,000 bottles. As you know our last WOTY 2018 campaign reached 1 million. A worthy milestone for the tenth edition, isn’t it?

How long does it take to select a WOTY? How early do you start?

It is a constant quest managed by the most experienced wine specialists we have the chance to get on board at Metro Group. We meet each other very often and can share the different options we have.

How many countries do you visit to find THE wine?

As I said, it is not only my team and me but a huge international community of wine experts tasting thousands of wines a year in a lot of different
production areas.

In wine terminology, how would you describe yourself?

I would compare myself to a Spumante with a wide flow- ery and fruity bouquet – made of white fruits.

When did you first discover your appreciation for wine?

I fell in love with wine and everything about it during my first VinItaly, the most important wine exhibition in Italy.

Is your ability to taste wine a gift, like a singer’s voice?

I would say no, also because I’m not very tuneful. It’s just training.

How do you enjoy wine? With food, on its own, socially?

Every occasion is welcome, but certainly wine means sociability. A perfect match! An evening with friends, a great dish; at home or in a restaurant.

Does one need to have an understanding of the drink to fully appreciate it?

Surely an expert can understand all the nuances in a wine, but we can describe them so that everyone is able to discover them.

What is the most important thing we should know about wine?

To know how to read the label carefully.

Why has wine become a luxury commodity, do you think?

The quality of wine has increased a lot over the past decades – at the expense of consumption. We drink much less but much better and unfortunately the average price for wine has increased in various parts of the world.

What does the process of selecting the WINE OF THE YEAR look like?

The first step is to start with a wine trend or even better for WOTY to start with a production area.

What are the requirements that a WOTY should fulfil?

The WOTY has to transport the area it comes from.
